Audi Q7 Car Reviews

The Q7 is Audis first foray into the large 4x4 market, and like its premium competitors, this offering is better suited to the road than rough terrain. The Audi Quattro four-wheel drive system is however very useful in adverse weather conditions, such as snow or ice, where other vehicles may struggle.

Audi Q7 Overview

The wide range of engine choices includes a pair of supercharged 3.0 litre petrol V6’s, a pair of 3.0 litre V6 turbodiesels and a 4.2 litre V8 diesel. There is also the option of a 493bhp 6.0 litre V12 diesel if fuel economy really isn’t of any concern. The less powerful 2.0 litre diesel has relatively low emissions for a car of this size, and can achieve an impressive 29.2mpg, although the Q7 could never be considered ‘green’.

As you’d expect from a vehicle of this size, the space inside the cabin is cavernous. With three rows of seats the Q7’s ability to seat 7 makes it ideal for a large family, although the 3rd should only really be considered suitable for children due to its limited legroom. The boot is reasonable with all seats upright, at 330 litres, but once the 3rd row is folded flat into the floor, this expands to 775 litres, with the option of folding the second row of seats flat too. There is also a waterproof storage area under the boot floor, which is a nice touch.

The quality of the dash, both in design and materials used, upholds Audi’s reputation. It is well laid out and clear to use. The seats are comfortable, supportive and highly adjustable for those in the front, whilst there are acres of room for those behind.

Background

This large 4x4 was first produced in 2005, however first went on sale as a 2007 model. It uses the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform, which it shares with the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. Still in its first generation, the Q7 received a facelift in 2009 which featured changes to both the exterior design and interior layout. The year also saw the introduction of the 3.0 litre clean diesel, which featured selective catalytic reduction to reduce CO2 emissions.

Summary

The Q7 is a large 4x4 that is best suited to the road. It provides an excellent option for the active family, provided they can afford to buy and run this huge vehicle.
