Audi A5 Car Reviews

The A5’s design lends itself to being a long distance cruiser. There is some wind noise at motorway speeds, but that should be expected in most vehicles, but there is very little engine noise, and the V6 diesel is remarkably quiet.

Audi A5 Overview

There are three basic models of this medium executive available, the sportback, coupe and cabriolet. Each of these is offered as part of Audi’s S-Line, and there is an RS version of the coupe also on the market.

There are 5 engines to choose from, two diesels a 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre V6, and three petrol offerings, 1.8 litre, 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre V6. The 2.0 litre diesel is the most economical, getting 60.1 combined mpg. The S5 and RS5 feature a larger 4.2 litre V8.

Although this coupe is a four seater, the rear head and leg room is a little cramped, so may not be comfortable for rear passengers on long journeys. Therefore this isn’t the most practical family car however the sportback version does have the edge over the coupe in terms of practicality, given its rear doors. The folding rear seats also make the boot large enough for almost any cargo you would need to carry.

Behind the wheel it is a comfortable experience, with a supportive adjustable seat that enables you to travel long distances with ease. The offset pedals can be of concern though, due to their unnatural positioning. The interior is as well-designed as any Audi offering and gives the expensive feel that the company has mastered oh so well.

Background

The A5 has been in production since 2007 and represents Audi’s return to the executive coupe market. Although Audi have the TT and R8 coupes, these are more sporty models, and it’s difficult to legitimately claim that they are true four seaters.  It also explains why the company ceased production of the convertible A4 for the fourth generation, with the A5 Cabriolet seen as its replacement.

It was developed on the Audi MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which has also been used by the most recent A4, as well as Audi’s larger luxury vehicles. Originally designed solely as a coupe, it was unveiled in 2007, before convertible and sportback versions began production in 2009 and the RS5 coupe in 2010.

Summary

The A5 is both beautifully built and sensibly priced against its rivals. It’s a long distance cruiser that eats up motorway miles, and the 4 cylinder 2.0 litre diesel engine gives excellent economy.
