Official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have revealed that although white is an increasingly popular colour choice for new car buyers, it may not represent the best value for money.

This is because many manufacturers no longer offer white as a free colour choice and are charging a premium upwards of £250 for the option. Over one in five new cars sold in the UK last year were white, up by 2% on the previous year, but of the top ten best selling cars only the Audi A3 and the Mini Hatchback offered the colour at no extra cost.

Of the top ten bestsellers Ford charge an additional £250 for the Fiesta and Focus models to be finished in white, while on the Volkswagen Golf it is an extra £260.  Vauxhall charge an extra £275 for plain white paint on a new Corsa, leaping to £545 for metallic.
