Volkswagen have announced they are to compete in this years Nurburgring 24-hour race with the all-new Golf24.
The four-wheel drive Golf24 is powered by a 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder, turbocharged engine generating almost 450bhp. The last factory entry for the Golf in the prestigious event on the fearsome, undulating Nordschleife at the Nürburgring was in 2007 with a front wheel drive, 300bhp car that finished in a creditable 8th place overall.
Now the Golf is to return, as part of a renewed effort from Volkswagen at the gruelling 24-Hour race on the famous track - with each lap over 15 miles long - and to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the Golf GTi.
Following the announcement, Volkswagen confirmed that the Golf24 had already undergone extensive testing towards the end of last year at Portugal's Portimao circuit, and at the Vallelunga track in Italy. Further extensive tests and development are anticipated to ensure the Golf24 is ready for the 24-Hour Nürburgring race, and it will also compete in three Endurance Championship races at the track as part of its preparations.
Volkswagen's Motorsport Director Kris Nissen - himself a winner of the 24-Hour Nürburgring race in 1991 - said, "With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge."
