The engine technology for the new Hybrid plug-in by BMW was produced exclusively at Hams Hall, near Birmingham.
The i8 is the first plug-in Hybrid sports car made by the German manufacturer and will be powered by a three-cylinder engine which will provide the performance characteristics of a high end BMW but with the fuel economy of much smaller cars.
The Hams Hall factory has become the centre of BMW’s hybrid ventures and a special development centre has been built on site, signalling the high quality of work and invention that the Midlands has to offer.
Plant director, Nick Spencer, said: “Our plant is going through a huge transformation, and we are excited to see the first of our brand-new engine assembly facilities ramping up production. The new three-cylinder petrol engines will enable the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car to set new standards for dynamic performance in combination with industry-leading fuel efficiency and low carbon emission levels. With the exclusive supply of these engines coming from the Hams Hall plant, we are proud to be contributing to this innovative new sports car.”
Demand has been high so far in the UK and the i8 has sold out for over a year. To develop the car and keep up with demand, a new team was formed from current BMW employees at the plant; they were handpicked and will continue to work on the company’s Hybrid future. The future looks bright for UK and particularly Midlands car production.
