Toyota have announced a voluntary product recall of some of their Avensis and Lexus IS 250 models.

The move has been prompted by customer feedback in overseas markets, and Toyota GB are working with the Vehicle and Operator Standards Agency (VOSA) to make written contact with the owners and keepers of vehicles affected by the recall to advise them of what to do.

Approximately 15,500 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol Avensis models made between July 2000 and September 2008 are affected by Toyota's recall. This is due to concerns over the possibility of the fuel pipe developing cracks over time, and insufficient tightening of the fuel pump check valve, which can potentially cause fuel leaks. Toyota have stressed that no reported accidents have been attributed to these issues, nor have they received any complaints from UK customers.  Toyota are contacting customers to advise that a replacement of the fuel pipe and fuel pump check valve should be carried out by an authorised Toyota repair centre. The 2 hour to 4 1/2 hour repair will be completed on affected vehicles at no cost to the customer.

In addition, Toyota is contacting the owners of certain Lexus IS 250 models produced between August 2007 and February 2009 due to concerns that the fuel pressure sensors may have been insufficiently tightened, which could lead to a fuel leak in rare cases. Again, the Japanese manufacturer has emphasised that no accidents have been reported in relation to this issue. Toyota will contact those affected - around 3,100 customers - and advise them to take their vehicles to an authorised repair centre at no cost to the customer. In these cases, the fuel pressure sensor requires re-tightening, a job expected to take around an hour, with repair time extending to three hours in cases where a fuel leak has resulted in the fuel pressure sensor gasket requiring replacement.

Toyota GB PLC Managing Director Jon Williams said, "We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of all our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption."
