Toyota's newly appointed chairman has announced that he wants to see the new Toyota and BMW co-developed sports car to become the next generation of Supra.

According to Bloomberg, Takeshi Uchiyamada thinks Toyota's next sports car should hark back to the 3.0-litre six-cylinder Supra, which went out of production in 2002, so that it doesn't overlap with the GT86 coupe.

"That’s what I want but it's not me who makes the decision," said Uchiyamada, who is known as the 'Father of the Prius' thanks to his role in the development of the world's best-selling hybrid. "It's futile if we make something similar [to the GT86]," he added.

Toyota and BMW announced at the beginning of the year that they'd be joining forces to build a new sports car, but neither company has since released any details on what this sports car might be.
