A Ferrari 250 GTO, built for racing driver Stirling Moss in 1962, has become the most expensive car ever sold, fetching £22.7 million.

The car, which was owned by UK-based businessman Eric Heerema was sold to a US-based collector.

Only 39 250 GTOs were made between 1962 and 1964 and the sale shows that the classic car market is booming despite the tough economic climate.

"I've never seen anything like it. It has gone crazy," said John Collins, who runs a specialist Ferrari dealership in Berkshire, "If someone wanted to sell their 250 GTO, I could find a buyer in 30 seconds."

It seems that other 250 GTO owners are capitalising on the booming market by selling their cars too. DJ Chris Evans reportedly sold his 250 GTO recently for £18 million -- £6.5 million more than he paid for it two years ago.

It's a sad fact of life that few of us will ever see, let alone own, a 250 GTO; however, we think we've found a way for you to get the most expensive car in the world on your drive for less than the cost of a knackered Nissan Micra.
