Subaru have updated their popular Forester SUV range, making a number of changes to the interior and engine options.

Most significantly, for the first time a diesel-powered Forester is available with a CVT automatic gearbox. This comes in the form of Subaru’s tried-and-tested 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed Boxer diesel, paired with the latest Lineartronic transmission. The model comes with the standard Forester all-wheel drive, featuring Hill Descent Control and Subaru’s X-Mode system which manages torque, brakes, and drivetrain to maximise traction.

The Boxer diesel engine has itself undergone a program of improvements, including noise and vibration reduction and greater fuel economy thanks to a new common-rail injection system and new glow plugs. A new radiator, fan, and oil cooler have been fitted, and the turbocharger settings revised. The new diesel engine and CVT gearbox option returns 46.3mpg combined, and 158g/km of CO2, while doing 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds.

Diesel-powered Forester’s fitted with the updated engine and the standard six-speed manual transmission have also seen a reduction in CO2 emissions, with a new figure of 148g/km. Acceleration has also been improved, with 0-62mph time falling by 0.4 seconds to 9.8 seconds, while the combined fuel economy remains 49.6mpg.

Inside the updated Forester is a new 7-inch touchscreen SatNav and infotainment system for all XC, AC Premium, and XT models. Bluetooth connectivity allows synchronisation with smartphones via StarLink, while the system can be controlled using voice activation. The interior also boasts a new piano black central fascia, metallic dashboard highlights, and additional USB port. A new Multi-Function display includes temperature, fuel economy, and all-wheel drive system data, as well as including a turbo boost gauge for 2.0-litre Direct Injection Turbo models.

Externally, the only change comes in the form of a new shark-fin antenna, replacing the pole antenna on previous Forester models.

The upgraded Subaru Forester goes on UK sale from 1 April, with all new models coming with a 5-year, 100,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty.
