Following the high profile and tragic death of a pensioner in a suspected road rage attack last week, motorists are being urged to do more to protect themselves and be more aware of the danger.

"Most of us will have some experience of being on the receiving end of someone else's aggression", said David Williams MBE, Cheif Executive of road safety and breakdown experts GEM Motoring Assist.

"Thankfully, violent and unprovoked attacks are rare, but it pays to be observant and if possible to recognise the signs of trouble at their earliest stages."

The organisation has issued advice for drivers to follow to avoid becoming involved in a confrontation. Firstly, keep calm and excercise restraint, resisting the urge to sound your horn or use angry gestures. Don't feel in competition with other road users, and resist the temptation to 'get even' even when someone else's driving irritates you. Don't push into traffic queues, forcing other drivers to give way will only antagonise them. Don't be afraid to acknowlege your mistakes, often an apologetic gesture can completely diffuse a potentially tense situation immediately. Leave plenty of time for your journey, as this will reduce the temptation to take risks and drive in an aggressive manner.

If all else fails and you feel another motorist poses a serious threat to your safety, lock your doors and drive to the nearest police station or busy area. Sound your horn repeatedly to alert passers by, and call the police on your mobile if safe to do so.
