An investigation by road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) into speeding offences committed on UK roads since April 2013 has yielded some startling results.
One case which has come to light is that of a motorist caught by a mobile speed camera on a 60mph stretch of the A96 Keith to Huntly road in Aberdeenshire while doing a staggering 139mph.
That example was discovered after the IAM made a freedom of information request to Police Scotland, which also revealed that of the top twenty worst cases of speeding north of the border during the time period in question, only one took place on a motorway.
A similar freedom of information request made to 39 police forces in England and Wales revealed a driver clocking more than twice the motorway speed limit, being caught out doing 149mph on the M25 at Swanley in Kent. This stretch of motorway seems something of a hotspot, with another motorist caught at 146mph in the same location to record the second highest figure in England in the time period.
IAM cheif executive Simon Best said: "These speeds show there are still drivers out there displaying a contempt for the law and the safety of their fellow road users."
