After a survey revealed that many drivers are not keeping up basic safety checks on their cars, Brake are advising them to be extra vigilant this winter.

The survey found that nearly half (45%) were guilty of driving with one or more risky defects in the last year with men and young people being the most likely offenders. More than a quarter of respondents said they were not confident in their ability to undertake basic checks such as tyre conditions and the effectiveness of their brakes.

Women were found to be considerably less confident in ensuring vehicle safety, however men were more willing to drive their car knowing that a problem existed which affected the safety of other road users and themselves.

In 2013, 2,000 road accidents were attributed to vehicle defects and 42 of them led to deaths. Brake say that a visit to their website (www.brake.org.uk) can give drivers access to a range of guides about safety and maintenance. They urge all drivers to take more care through the winter months.

Julie Townsend of Brake said ‘’ If you are unsure of what to do, follow Brake’s advice, and consult a local mechanic if you need to. And if you do discover a problem, don’t put off getting it fixed.’’
