Waiting to turn right onto a busy road with flowing traffic is one of the most frustrating things a motorist has to face.

Watching car after car whizz by whilst allowing your perception of acceptable risk to be brought into disrepute by passengers, onlookers, or indeed yourself, is an unpleasant experience.

“Should I have gone then? Could I go now?”

Often, after your propensity for caution has been nullified by impatience - or downright embarrassment - the resulting manoeuvre is forced and risky, leading to considerable, and entirely justified, annoyance from the oncoming traffic.

The wait to turn right, which seems to be an eternity, is made infinitely worse when you have a queue of drivers behind you, each one, you imagine, judging you for your incompetence on the road, shaking their heads, tapping their steering wheels, or even sounding their horns if they’re particularly unsympathetic.

I must admit to being one of these judgemental drivers on a regular - almost daily - basis, however I try to avoid displaying any outward or tangible signs of frustration as I don’t want a crash on my conscience. Like any normal person I realise that my excessive anguish is indeed trivial, and besides, an accident would most likely lead to me being delayed even further.

There is one thing though, one thing that sends me to the point of despair, one thing which leaves me feeling as if I no longer have cause for restraint, and one thing that leads me so far down the road of homicidal thoughts that I almost - and I mean almost - beep my horn, and here it is…

Scenario:

There is a queue of traffic at a junction, all indicating left, other than the one person at the front of the queue who is slap bang in the middle of a lane that is wide enough for two buses, and they are indicating right (see diagram below). This person is the devil. This person (and their merry band of ignorant demons) are causing thousands of people to be sat in unnecessary traffic, to be late for work, to get divorced, to be cruel to pets, to have higher blood pressure, and ultimately, to die sooner.

Solution:

Just by positioning themselves a metre or so to the right they would allow for multiple cars to pass and turn left while they wait patiently for their chance to pull out safely.

There is NO excuse for this! Other than being the devil, or completely ignorant, totally incompetent, spatially unaware, or… just not really paying attention for various reasons. Okay, this person may in fact not be the devil, maybe they’re just a bit distracted by something important, or thinking about how much they do for charity, or underprivileged children. They may well be a very decent and otherwise brilliant individual. But, on this occasion, they are destroying families, inciting cruelty to animals, and slashing the life expectancy of many an innocent person.

We should not stand for it. And we most certainly should not sit in traffic for it!
