If you squint really hard at the picture above, you'll just be able to make out the outline of the new Range Rover Sport, which is making its debut on 26 March on the eve of the New York Motor Show.

The new Range Rover Sport is described by Land Rover as its "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date." Very little is known about the new car, but we can reveal that it's based on the same platform as the new Range Rover. It should therefore be lighter, faster and more economical than the outgoing model, which was based on the Land Rover Discovery.

Under the bonnet, buyers will have a choice of a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine and two diesels -- a 4.4-litre V8 and a 3.0-litre V6 -- the latter of which is likely to be the most popular in the UK.

Land Rover's Global Brand Director, John Edwards, said: "The all-new Range Rover Sport takes the model to another level. It is Land Rover's most dynamic vehicle yet and showcases the best of British design, engineering and technological innovation."

Land Rover has chosen the New York Motor Show to reveal the new Sport as more Sports are sold in New York than in any other city worldwide. The Sport is also the firm's biggest selling model in North America.
