The Range Rover Evoque is set to become the first production car in history to be fitted with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
The new gearbox was developed in conjunction with ZF and is designed to replace the existing six-speed unit which is currently used across the Evoque range.
Land Rover claims that increasing the number of ratios from six to nine gives a "significant improvement" in fuel economy and CO2 emissions, with improved response during acceleration, improved shift quality and higher levels of refinement.
The new gearbox has a much wider range of ratios than the existing six-speed, with a taller top gear for better fuel economy at cruising speeds, and a lower first gear for improved off-road performance.
Unlike the old six-speed, the nine-speed 'box also has the ability to skip ratios on the downshift, providing better driver control under braking.
