The new Porsche Macan has made its long-awaited debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show today. The Macan becomes the fifth model in Porsche's line-up and has been designed to rival the likes of the and the Range Rover Evoque.
Porsche is expecting the Macan to become its biggest seller and has designed it specifically to appeal to both traditional SUV buyers and Porsche enthusiasts alike.
From launch, three Macan models will be available: the £43,300 Macan S, the £43,300 Macan Diesel S and the £59,300 Macan Turbo. The Macan S is the entry-level petrol model with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 which develops 335bhp and 339lb-ft of torque, giving a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 158mph.
The Macan S diesel, meanwhile, uses a tweaked version of the 3.0-litre V6 unit already used in the Cayenne. 255bhp and 428lb-ft of torque are enough to give the S diesel a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 143mph.
Top of the range is the Macan Turbo which uses a 3.6-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 which develops 394bhp and 406lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes just 4.8 seconds and flat out the Turbo will do 165mph.
All models come with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive as standard. The gearbox includes a start-stop system and a coasting system which automatically declutches when you lift off the throttle on the motorway. This helps the base Macan S achieve CO2 emissions of 204g/km and fuel economy of 32.5mpg. The diesel will manage 46.3mpg and 159g/km, while the Turbo returns 31.7mpg and 208g/km.
Further engines are due to be launched in 2015, with a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot unit slated for arrival alongside a smaller diesel.
The Macan is based on the same architecture as the Audi Q5, featuring the same floorpan and body structure. Although slightly larger than the Q5, the Macan is significantly smaller than the Cayenne and the Cayenne S tips the scales at just 1865kg -- 200kg less than its bigger brother.
Underneath, the Macan gets double wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. Electric power steering comes as standard and air suspension can be added as an option.
The Porsche Macan is available to order now, with the first cars destined to arrive in the UK in April 2014.
