Porsche has confirmed rumours that the next generation of the Boxster and Cayman will be offered with turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

In an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine, Porsche CEO Matthias Muller said that future Porsche road cars will follow the lead of the company's 919 Hybrid racing car by receiving a range of smaller, turbocharged engines.

However, while the engine in the 919 is a V engine, the units which will be fitted to the Boxster and Cayman will be horizontally-opposed units, in true Porsche tradition.

No information has yet been released on the new power-plants; however, Muller has confirmed that the engines will produce "up to 400ps [395bhp]."

The news comes just months after Porsche confirmed that the new Macan SUV would be fitted with a four-pot engine.
