The DVLA's Oliver Morley has taken to Twitter to leak a prototype image of an electronic driving licence that lives in the virtual "wallet" on his iPhone.

Morley's Twitter caption - accompanied by the photo above -  reads:

"So here's a little prototype of something we're working on #drivinglicence"

There's no other information available on the subject as of yet but there's nothing cryptic about this Tweet, the DVLA are clearly looking to add your driving licence to your smartphone's arsenal.

In recent years the mobile phone has taken on a whole new life, you can now store your credit cards and airline boarding passes on your device, there's even talk of an electronic, smartphone version of your passport.

Whilst stories like this are always greeted with initial scepticism (and downright panic) from a section of our population, we think its a great idea, one less thing to carry around!
