Peugeot promises to "regenerate the iconic values of the 205 GTi" with the new 208 GTi, which goes on sale here in the UK next spring.

The new 208 GTi gets a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine which develops 197bhp, propelling the car from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds. The power is fed to the front wheels via a six speed manual gearbox, and Peugeot has tweaked the exhaust so the 208 sounds like a GTi should.

Don't think that the 208 GTi has been geared purely for acceleration either; Peugeot claims that 50-70mph in fifth gear takes just 7.0 seconds; however, despite this impressive performance, CO2 emissions are rated at just 145g/km.

Peugeot has also been busy tweaking the 208's suspension. The GTi is lower and wider than the standard car and features tracks that are 10mm wider at the front and 20mm wider at the rear. The GTi also gets new dampers, anti-roll bars, springs and steering.

You'll be able to tell the 208 GTi apart from the standard car thanks to its redesigned front bumper and grille and the GTi badges on the C-pillars which mirror the badges fitted to the old 205 GTi.

Ah yes, the 205 GTi. Why do we keep going on about a car which went out of production over fifteen years ago? Well, put simply, the 205 GTi was probably the best hot hatch ever made, a high water-mark which Peugeot has been struggling to reach ever since.

However, will the new 208 GTi be as good as its legendary great-grandfather? We'll tell you once we get a chance to drive it.

You'll soon be able to find out for yourself too, as the 208 GTi goes on sale next year with prices starting from £18,000.
