Order books are now open for the updated Volkswagen Golf range.

Not only does the refreshed line up bring new engines, technology, and features, but prices are on average £650 less than for the corresponding outgoing model.

The entry-level Golf 1.0 TSI 85 PS 3dr retains the same £17,635 starting price as its predecessor, but price reductions moving up the range sees the ever-popular model now offer even better value.

S, SE, SE Nav, GT, R-Line, GTE, GTE Advance, e-Golf, GTD, GTD BlueLine, GTI, GTI Performance, and R models comprise the hatchback line-up, while the estate range includes S, SE, SE Nav, GT, GTD, GTD BlueLine, and new Alltrack, and R models.

Improvements across the range include LED rear lights as standard, while the majority of models benefit from a new generation of larger and more sophisticated touchscreen infotainment systems with the gesture controlled Discover Navigation Pro radio-navigation and online system available on selected models. Design changes include new front and rear bumpers, halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights or full LED headlights, and new front wings. New wheel designs, new body colours, and new trim panels are also part of the update.

Dependent on model, safety technologies include City Emergency Braking with new pedestrian monitoring, new Traffic Jam Assist with semi-automated driving at speeds of up to 37 mph, and new Emergency Assist.

Another new addition is the turbocharged direct-injection 1.0 TSI 85 PS engine with a fuel economy of up to 58.9 mpg combined. Another power plant to debut in the new Golf is the turbocharged petrol 1.5 TSI Evo 150 PS, a new four-cylinder engine with Active Cylinder Management. A BlueMotion version of this engine is also available. The performance models in the range have had their performance tweaked too, with the range-topping Golf R now capable of doing 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds.

CO2 emissions have been reduced by up 10g/km due in part to a new efficient 7-speed DSG gearbox, while all Golfs feature BlueMotion Technologies such as a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode.

The latest models are now in place in UK showrooms, where the Golf accounted for 1-in-3 Volkswagen car sales last year.
