Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third generation of its SLK Roadster.
With wings and a bonnet made from aluminium, Mercedes claims that the new SLK "blends light-footed sportiness with stylish comfort". The car certainly looks the part and incorporates a number of styling cues that Mercedes claim hark back to the 190 SL of the 1950s.
The new SLK will be available with a choice of three direct-injection petrol engines. The SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and the SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY are both fitted with the same 1.8-litre 4-pot, producing 184bhp and 204bhp, respectively. In the 200, this engine delivers 46.3mpg and gets the SLK from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 147mph. The top SLK is the new 350 BlueEFFICIENCY which is fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 producing 306bhp, and accelerating from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.
An interesting new feature on the new SLK is what Mercedes is calling 'Magic Sky Control'. The SLKs with this new feature will have a panoramic glass roof which switches between light and dark at the touch of a button. When on the light setting, the glass roof gives the feel of open-top motoring, but on the dark setting, the roof provides shade and prevents the car from heating up on hot days.
Mercedes have been tight-lipped on the subject of pricing but expect further information to be released ahead of the car's UK debut in June.
