In a move which provides a boost for UK exports, as well as showing a sign of confidence in this country’s car manufacturing sector, Honda have revealed that the new Civic Type R will be produced here before being shipped to Japan for sale on the company’s domestic market.

The new Civic Type R - Honda’s 167mph VTEC Turbo-powered ‘race car of the road’- has just entered production in the UK ahead of its European launch this summer, and the same plant will be responsible for producing and exporting the model when it goes on sale in Japan later this year. The new Civic Type R will be priced from £29,995 in the UK.

Honda’s UK production facility in Wiltshire employs some 3,000 people, and it was recently announced that the plant will undergo a £200 million investment package to become the global manufacturing centre for the next generation five door Civic model.

“We're delighted that the European Civic Type R will be sold to customers in Honda's home country of Japan”, said Honda Motor Europe Senior Vice President, Philip Ross.

“Customers are really excited about this car and we're developing a significant order bank here in Europe. Exporting the car to Japan will only serve to increase demand further, which is great news!"
