Mitsubishi Motors has admitted to falsifying fuel economy tests for more than 600,000 vehicles.

Mitsubishi has explained that it has stopped making and selling the vehicles and that an independent panel had been set up to investigate, but the announcement has left shares for the Japanese car maker down 15%, their biggest one-day fall in almost 12 years.

The falsified test results involved 157,000 Mitsubishi light passenger cars and 468,000 vehicles that they produced for Nissan. It was Nissan who uncovered the issue after pointing out inconsistencies in emissions data. An internal Mitsubishi investigation then found that figures had been falsified.

The bulk of the cars affected are thought to have been sold on the Japanese domestic market. Nissan has claimed that none of the cars carrying their badge were sold in the UK.
