The new Lotus Exige S roadster, the fastest drop-top ever to come from the Norfolk manufacturer, will go on sale in the UK in the summer. Lotus announced the car's arrival online, via a new, extremely low-rent video.
And when we say low-rent, we mean low-rent. It looks like it was recorded on a mobile phone and, according to the credits, it was stitched together using iMovie and edited by 'A. Novice'. On the plus side, at least it appears that Lotus has a sense of humour.
Anyway, back to the car. The Exige S Roadster will come with the same 3.5-litre V6 engine fitted to the existing coupe model, producing 345bhp and 295lb-ft of torque. 0-60mph takes 3.8 seconds and Lotus has even had to limit the Exige's natural 170mph top speed to 145mph, in order to stop the car's fabric roof peeling away at high speed.
A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, while Lotus' Serial Precision Shift (SPS) flappy-paddle gearbox is available as an option.
The Roadster also weighs 10kg less than the Coupe, partly due to the removal of the roof, partly due to the removal of the rear spoiler, and partly because Lotus has not had to stiffen the Exige's bodyshell at all.
The Lotus Race Pack is also likely to be available on the new car, offering a more track-focussed setup.
