The latest batch of ratings from crash testers Euro NCAP have been released and the big news is that Vauxhall's latest city car, the Adam, failed to score the top five stars in the tests.

The Adam was the one of only two cars amongst the five tested which missed out on the top five star rating. The Toyota Corolla, the new Mazda6 and the Lexus IS 300h all received the top rating, while the Mitsubishi Mirage earned four stars too.

Although the Adam did well in the front impact test, chest protection for adult occupants was rated as "weak" in the sever side impact pole test. Protection against whiplash for adult occupants in a rear impact was rated as "marginal" and in the pedestrian test, the protection provided to shorter pedestrians was criticised.

Although it has become increasingly common for cars to be awarded the five-star ranking in the NCAP tests, the Vauxhall Adam is not alone in the city car market for missing out on the top score. Many of the Adam's key rivals, including the Fiat Panda, the Hyundai i10, the Kia Picanto and the Ford Ka achieved just four stars.

The only city cars to have achieved the full five star rating in the city car class are the Fiat 500, the Toyota iQ and each member of the VW up!/SEAT Mii/Skoda Citigo family.
