Infiniti has revealed its new Q50 saloon at the Detroit Motor Show, ahead of its UK launch later this year.
The new Q50 is the first model in the Infiniti range to use Infiniti's new naming scheme, and is designed to steal sales away from the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4 in the competitive compact executive market.
Two new engines have been confirmed for the new Q50 -- a 3.7-litre V6 petrol unit and a 3.5-litre engine mated to a hybrid system. Infiniti claims that another two engines are on the cards, one of which will need to be a diesel if the Q50 is to make an impact on the British market.
A seven-speed automatic gearbox will be fitted as standard and all models will be available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The new car certainly looks the part and Infiniti claims that the styling of the Q50 hints at the future direction the company will take with its new models. Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president of Infiniti, said: "The new Q50's athletic and tightened appearance blends its lower and wider proportions with enhanced interior roominess to stunning effect inside and out.
"Moving forward, we want all Infiniti vehicles to reflect an energetic force rooted in nature, such as the shape of a dynamic wave."
On the inside, the Q50 is more spacious than its predecessor, with more legroom and headroom and 510-litres of boot space -- a 60-litre improvement over the G37.
The Q50 also comes with Infiniti's new adaptive steering system and an improved lane-keep assist system which can apparently make adjustments to the steering to counter the effects of crosswinds and poor road surfaces.
Full details of the new Infiniti Q50 will be revealed when the car makes its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
