Vauxhall have released images of the all-new Insignia GSi, which is to debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Bringing back the GSi moniker last used on the Vectra, the Insignia GSi will feature all-wheel drive, a new chassis, and Brembo brakes, and will be powered by a refined 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. An eight-speed automatic gearbox can be operated using a steering-wheel mounted paddle-shift for an active and responsive driving experience.

Externally, the GSi will be distinguished by chrome front air intakes and a downforce-producing rear spoiler, while the inside has full-leather sports seats, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals.

Its chassis has been fine-tuned in testing at the iconic Nürburgring circuit. The GSi is 160kg lighter than the standard Insignia, and combined with a low centre of gravity is quicker around the track too. Shorter springs lower the GSi by 10mm, and sports shock absorbers reduce body movement. Brembo four-pot calliper front brakes work in conjunction with the mechatronic FlexRide chassis which adapts the suspension and steering instantly, while the chassis control unit changes the calibration of the accelerator pedal and the shift points of the eight-speed transmission to refine the steering and throttle response to suit whichever situation.

The GSi will offer three key driving modes - Standard, Tour and Sport – as well as a specially-developed fourth ‘Competition’ setting which switches the traction control off with a double push of the ESP button.

Standard fit Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres and 18-inch wheels maximise grip, aided by all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. Fuel consumption figures are 32.8mpg combined, with 197g/km of CO2 emissions.

AGR-certified sports seats offer increased lateral support and long-distance comfort, providing ventilation, heating, massage and adjustable side bolsters. They can be specified in one of two leather combinations, each featuring the GSi emblem.
