Plans to introduce 60mph sections on British motorways have been cancelled.
Government ministers have been considering proposals which would mean some stretches of motorway having a speed limit of 60mph. Their intention is to cut emissions and therefore reduce air pollution. Motoring groups will be happy to hear that the plans have been scrapped after they reacted angrily to the mention of limit reductions earlier in the year.
The Highways Agency had suggested that sections of the M1 and the M3 would be brought under the 60mph control between 7am and 7pm.
David Bizley from the RAC had this to say: “We were concerned that other similar limits might be necessary as more ‘smart motorway’ hard shoulder-running schemes are introduced. It is therefore good news that the Secretary of State for Transport has listened to road users and recognised that a 60mph limit on these stretches of the M1 and M3 is the thin end of the wedge.“
However, we also should be mindful that a solution that does not breach air quality limits and keeps traffic moving at 70mph may not be achievable. Let’s hope for the sake of motorists and businesses alike that it is.”
Ministers have instructed the Highway Agency to find an alternative means of reducing air pollution as they deem the current proposals to be unacceptable.
