The newly-appointed transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, has hinted that the government is considering scrapping the proposed increased 80mph motorway speed limit.

The news comes less than a year after former Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said that increasing the motorway speed limit would "put Britain back in the fast lane of global economies".

McLoughlin, however, argued that safety is the government's number one priority.

"What's very important is that we never lose sight about the issue of safety on our roads," he told Sky News. "First and foremost in my mind will be road safety, but I will look at the evidence -- there's a consultation taking place on that."

The news has been welcomed by the road safety charity Brake. Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of the charity, said: "Evidence shows 80mph limits would cause more people to be killed and seriously injured on motorways, as well as creating more CO2, while it is doubtful they would lead to significant journey time savings."
