With the changing of the season from winter to spring, road safety organisation the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called on drivers to be properly prepared for the new conditions.

Peter Rodger, the organisation’s Chief Examiner, has compiled a number of helpful advice and tips for UK motorists.

Appropriately, topping that list is to give your car a good old fashioned spring clean. There is a practical purpose for doing so – all that grime and dirt collected over the winter can lead to corrosion. In addition to a thorough external clean, there are car washes that will offer vehicle underside cleaning.

While giving the car a clean, don’t forget to check the brake fluid, screenwash, and coolant, and top up if necessary. The IAM say these are often used up more during winter driving.

The onset of brighter weather also brings with it a higher pollen count, a nightmare for hay fever suffers who should check they have a working pollen filter. The glare from early morning or low evening sun can also catch out drivers as the days get lighter, and the IAM recommends always keeping a pair of sunglasses handy to combat this.

“Many annoying problems can be prevented by simple checks and regular maintenance”, said Mr Rodger, “and keeping your windows and mirrors clear of dirt and blemishes can prevent accidents and save lives.”
