The Ford Focus is now leaner, cleaner, and greener than ever before with the launch of the new ECOnetic model at next weeks Amsterdam Motor Show.
The improved efficiency of the new model is achieved thanks to Ford’s tweaking of the 1.6 litre Duratorq engine to gain an extra 13mpg over the current 1.6 TDCI. The ECOnetic, which will come in both five door hatchback and estate form, is now capable of over 80mpg.
It also gives a reduction in CO2 emissions of 14g/km, with CO2 emissions of under 95g/km comparing favourably with other cars in its class such as the 85g/km Kia Rio. A further reduction in CO2 emissions comes from its Active Grille Shutter system. This clever feature of the ECOnetic closes the air intakes when it senses that less airflow is required, and gives a 2% reduction in CO2 emissions.
Other features of the revamped 105bhp engine are a redesigned turbocharger with enhanced engine cooling, and friction reducing components. This is accompanied by a Durashift 6-speed manual gearbox, which uses a special low-friction transmission oil that reduces friction losses. The gearbox is also designed to reduce engine speed when cruising in top gear.
The car boasts the full range Ford ECOnetic Technologies as standard, including Ford Auto-Start-Stop, Ford Eco Mode, Smart Regenerative Charging, and Shift Indicator Light.
External changes see improved aerodynamic performance, with extra undershields and deflectors boosting airflow. The ECOnetic also sports wheels fitted with low-drag hubcaps and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres.
The ECOnetic will be available in UK showrooms in spring 2012.
