The Ford Fiesta has become the UK’s best-selling vehicle ever after it passed the 4,115,000 mark earlier this month.
Since its launch in 1976, the Ford Fiesta has been the UK’s most popular small car and has been the overall best-selling car since it took that crown from its big brother - the Ford Focus - five years ago. This month it passed the previous record of 4,105,961 sales held by the Ford Escort, which ran in production from 1968-2000.
The current model is developed in the UK by engineers at Ford’s Dunton, Essex, research and development centre, as well as the Ford Diesel Centre at Dagenham. A nationwide effort, the Fiesta ST’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost power unit is built in South Wales at the Bridgend Engine Plant.
Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain chairman and managing director, said: “The Ford Fiesta has gone from strength to strength and today’s car combines style, value, driving dynamics and remarkable technologies such as the multi-award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. It continues to outsell its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one – and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car.”
The Fiesta has come a long way over its 38 year life. Despite weighing around 300kg more than a 1976 original, a modern day Fiesta is almost twice as fuel efficient and produces around 50 per cent less in CO2 emissions.
Accounting for more than 40 per cent of sales, the 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine is the most popular choice of power unit, while the £12,945 Ford Fiesta Zetec is the best-selling model.
