The 4.5-litre V8 engine utilised in the Ferrari 458 Italia has won two accolades at the 2011 International Engine of the Year Awards.

The engine won the award for 'Best Performance Engine', and also took away the gong in the 'Above 4-litre' category. The jury, comprising of 76 motoring journalists from 36 countries, assessed the engine in terms of performance, economy, refinement and driveability and reserved special praise for the V8 engine's sound.

The design of the V8 has been influenced by Ferrari's extensive experience in Formula One racing and produces 562bhp. The V8 is also the highest-revving piston-engined road car ever fitted to a road car, redlining at 9,000rpm. On top of this, the engine now also boats class-leading emissions figures; the 458 produces only 275g/km of CO2 - 70g less than the old F430.
