The new entry-level Caterham Seven will be powered by a three-cylinder 660cc Suzuki engine, the smallest and most efficient engine the company has ever used.

Caterham claims that the by using a small turbocharged engine in the new Seven, they are paying homage to the early incarnations of the car and remaining true to Colin Chapman's original mantra of "simplify, then add lightness".

Thanks to the smaller engine, the new Seven is claimed to deliver vastly improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox which is supplied by Suzuki and modified by Caterham Technology and Innovation (CTI). There have also been tweaks to the chassis and the suspension setup.

Caterham Cars CEO, Graham Macdonald, said of the new car: "It is not engine size that matters, it is the grin factor that is our barometer and we believe we have got the formula for our new entry-level vehicle just right.

"Our intention for this car is to offer the joy of the Seven in distilled form, so the new entry-level car is lighter, cheaper, more economical and more accessible than ever."

The new Seven will cost from less than £17,000 when it goes on sale later this year.
