Now the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in, drivers are being asked to take extra care.

That’s because a new study commissioned by DS Automobiles has revealed just how much the risk of fatal road accidents increases in the dark.

That the rate of accidents increases after dark will probably come as little shock, but it is still startling to learn the poor visibility, headlight dazzle, and fatigue result in a five-fold leap in the number of fatal crashes between 7pm and 7am.  Despite night-time journey accounting for just 20% of overall journeys in the UK, they resulted in almost 40% of all fatal accidents.
