Caterham has released its first ever sports prototype racing car. The SP/300.R has been design to compete in a new one-make series and is also aimed at the trackday community.
It's not often that Caterham releases a brand new car; the last new model released by the Surrey firm was the 21 of 1994. Designed in partnership with Lola Cars, the new car will be fitted with a new supercharged version of Ford's 2.0-litre Duratec engine, expected to develop around 300bhp.
Like all Caterhams, the SP/300.R will be exceptionally lightweight, tipping the scales at less than 600kg. Keen mathematicians will have worked out that this equates to 500bhp/tonne - more than a Bugatti Veyron. Unsurprisingly, the SP/300.R will be fast - 0-60mph will happen in a dizzying 2.5 seconds and the top speed will be around 170mph.
The Caterham should be razor sharp through the corners as well with the car generating optimal downforce thanks to a front splitter and rear wing, and ground effect thanks to a flat underbody.
Caterham is in the final stages of developing the car and are considering the viability of producing a road-legal version. Only 25 cars will be produced a year, and the SP/300.R will cost £60,000, before tax.
