BMW plan to give fleet companies a glimpse of the future when they showcase the new i8 sports car at the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association's upcoming Fleet Technology Congress.

The BMW i8 is one of the first plug-in hybrid sports cars to enter the UK market, and the German carmaker - a hugely popular choice for fleet car buyers - expect much of its cutting-edge technology to become commonplace over the coming years.

Amongst the more unusual features for a production car, the i8 makes considerable use of carbon fibre and aluminium in its construction, as well as having autonomous emergency braking and surround-view cameras.  The BMW i8 is powered by the combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 131bhp, and a 7.1kwh battery.  As a result, the innovative sports car returns an impressive 135mpg and emits only 49g/km of CO2.

"Rental and leasing companies will no doubt be keen to see the technology under the skin of this revolutionary sports car as it will gradually filter down and become standard on mainstream fleet cars in the coming years", said BVRLA Chief Executive Gerry Kearney, ahead of the Congress at Gaydon's Heritage Motor Centre on 1 July.
