The production version of the new BMW i3 electric has been leaked online ahead of its planned public unveiling next week.

The images show the production i3 without camouflage for the first time and, as you can see, there's a strong visual link between the production model and the i3 Coupe Concept which was unveiled at last week's Los Angeles Motor Show.

We are also afforded our first glimpse of the i3's interior which takes a simplistic approach. Apart from a smattering of buttons on the dashboard, there is very little clutter in the i3's cabin and a large central touchscreen dominates the centre console.

It was revealed earlier this week that the i3 will cost from £25,680 (including the £5k government grant) when it goes on sale in the UK at the end of the month.

Under the bonnet, the i3 gets a 168bhp electric motor which is capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 93mph. The i3 is also expected to weigh less than 1,200kg thanks to liberal use of carbon-fibre and aluminium in the car's construction.

A range extender hybrid version of the i3 is also reportedly in the pipeline buy it is unclear when it will be added to the UK line-up.

Oder books for the i3 open at the end of the month with the first deliveries expected in October.
