The Volvo V70 is a mid-size five-door estate car designed to replace the Volvo S90. It is currently in its third generation with its newest model making an attempt at being more up market than the V70s that had gone before it. The newest V70 has shown many signs of improvement such as an increase in rear-seat legroom as well as an increase in the load area volume.

Volvo V70 Overview

Currently there is a wide range of engine options for the V70, ranging from a 2.0 litre straight-4 engine to a 3.2 litre straight-6 engine as well as a few diesel options. Volvo are also going to begin producing a diesel-electric, plug-in hybrid version of the Volvo V70.

Prices are reasonable for Volvo V70 especially considering the space and versatility that’s provided. The 2.0-litre T engine isn’t the most exciting to drive, but the car should get reasonable insurance rates. The car gets decent fuel economy, and enjoys high resale values.

Background

The Volvo V70 was first put into production in 1997 and has since received a number of updates in order to keep the model relevant.

The first generation of V70 ran from 1997 to 2000 and saw 3 phases of the car being produced within that generation alone.

The second generation of the V70 ran from 2000 to 2007 and was based on the new (at the time) P2 Platform and was the first of the V70s to move away from the boxy image to a more curvaceous image.

The third generation continued the theme of being more curvaceous and aesthetically pleasing and has been in production since 2007. It uses the Ford EUCD platform and shares a lot of its interior with the Volvo S80 which is by no means a bad thing.

Like most Volvos the V70 comes with very generous safety features as standard, the newest safety device is the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS). This system alerts the driver to other cars and motorbikes in his or her blind spot. This is just the latest in the company’s long line of safety features.

Summary

Overall the Volvo V70 is a practical and comfortable estate with plenty to offer buyers. The car is second to none in safety, and the company has managed to add on a few new safety innovations as well.
