Toyota Prius+ Car Reviews

Toyota attempts to bring eco-worthiness to the family MPV market with mixed results. The Prius+ is too expensive for what it is, and the fuel economy isn't all that amazing either.

Toyota Prius+ T4 Hybrid 5dr - July 2012
Hmm... we're a bit stumped by the Prius+ T4 Hybrid. On the one hand, it's a good family car, which offers space, practicality and low running costs. However, on the other hand, it is simply too exp...

Toyota Prius+ Overview

The Prius+, like the standard Prius, is fitted with a 1.8-litre petrol engine and an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. Unlike the Prius, however, the Prius+ seats seven, making it a practical family people-carrier.

The engine feels very refined and smooth and there is very little wind and road noise. 0-62mph takes 11.8 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 106mph.

There's plenty of boot space with 500-litres on offer with the rear seats down; however, the rearmost seats are suitable only for children and shorter adults -- taller rear passengers will need to visit a chiropractor after a long journey.

The Prius+'s trump card should be its fuel economy… but it isn't. The car returns 57mpg on the combined cycle which, while respectable, isn't really enough to justify its high price tag.

The Prius+ is available from £26,195 OTR -- a diesel Zafira Tourer is not only cheaper than the Prius+, but more economical too.

Background

The Prius+ (or the Prius v, as it is known in the American market) was unveiled at the 2011 Detroit Motor Show. It is the first car (other than the Prius) to be built on the Prius platform and went on sale in the UK in June 2012.

The standard Prius on which the Prius+ is based has been around since 1997 and has been produced in three generations: 1997-2003, 2003-2009 and 2009-.

Summary

There is very little to recommend the Prius+. It's expensive, cramped in the back and not as economical as Toyota would have you believe. Plus, if it's the environment you're worried about, the Prius+ has created a huge carbon footprint before it even reaches the garage forecourt. If you want to save the planet, buy a used car. If you want an economical people-carrier, buy a diesel MPV like the Vauxhall Zafira, and if you desperately want a Prius, buy the hatchback.
