Toyota Landcruiser Overview

The Current Land Cruiser comes with the choice of five different engines and has a huge range of new features and upgrades in comparison with the previous model. It is very high-tech with an ignition starter button and a smart entry system which makes the previously daunting task of opening a car door much less painstaking.

Despite all the changes made on the current model, it is still unmistakably a Land Cruiser, which will climb every mountain and ford every stream in a rugged and dependable fashion.

Background

The Toyota Land Cruiser was first put into production over half a century ago in 1951 as a response to the demand for a military light utility vehicle in Japan. It was then known as the Toyota Jeep BJ receiving its Land Cruiser name in 1954 to ensure everyone knew it was a direct competitor with the British Land Rover… Who wants to Rove land when you can Cruise it?

During the 60s and 70s the Land Cruiser really took off, achieving much success and worldwide status. 1980 saw the arrival of the Land Cruiser 60 series which was a front engine four door estate/4x4 which could potentially seat up to 8 people. Still more than capable in terms of off-roading, the 60 series land cruiser was made with the SUV market in mind. It was replaced in 1989 by the 80 series which became renowned for its round body shape until production ceased in 1997. Alternative 70 series and 90 series were also available at this time.

The 100 series hit the market in 1998 to replace the 80 series. Another version of the 100 series, the 105 series was also made available. Both had exactly the same body but contained different insides.

In 2007 the 200 series was introduced, sharing the same platform as the Lexus LX 570.

Summary

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a more than capable off-roader which, despite its new features and technologies, has a no-nonsense approach.
