The car entered its second generation in 1978. The car received a redesigned exterior, and from 1982 a turbocharged engine was available.
The Colt was produced in its third generation from 1983. Yet again the car sported a revised body shape, and a 5-door estate variant was now available.
The fourth generation of the Mitsubishi Colt, produced between 1987 and 1992, featured an upgraded selection of engines and transmissions. This generation received a facelift in 1991, providing the car with a sportier look.
Between 1991 and 1996 the Colt was available as a 2-door coupe in its fifth generation.
Mitsubishi produced the Colt in its sixth generation from 1995 until 2002. This model was available with a much wider range of engines.
The seventh and current generation of the Mitsubishi Colt has been in production since 2002. The seventh generation vehicle has received several updates over the course of its lifetime. In 2006 the company released the Colt MIEV, using separate electric motors at each wheel to power it.
