IAM RoadSmart, formerly the Institute of Advanced Motorists, have issued some timely advice for drivers preparing to make a Bank Holiday getaway.
“With so much planning involved in a holiday, many of us forget about the first bit – how we get to our destination”, said the IAM’s head of driving and riding standards Richard Gladman.
His advice is to make important pre-journey checks to your vehicle before setting off. These include tyre pressures and fluid levels, and that all of the car’s ancillaries are working correctly. Make sure any luggage is secured safely and doesn’t obstruct your view.
It is important to allow plenty of time for your journey, and check the news for any troublesome traffic jams and roadworks. If using a satnav, programme the journey in before setting off and not while you are driving.
Make sure you are sufficiently rested before departing so that you are alert behind the wheel, and plan regular rest breaks on long journeys, especially for boring motorway driving.
