CarSite Verdict:  4/5
This is a medium sized family car with great performance credentials. The car is highly fuel efficient and has relatively low CO2 emissions, but the GTD does not perform as well as the GTI, though it is cheaper to buy and run. There is also a good level of kit available.

PROS:  The Golf has great fuel efficiency and speedy acceleration, plus Euro NCAP awarded this vehicle the maximum safety rating of five stars.

CONS:  The GTD is not as fast as the GTI and the price is fairly high in comparison to the other Golf models.

Behind the Wheel

The GTD has a top speed of 138 mph and can travel from 0-62 mph in just 8.1 seconds. The power output of this car is 168 bhp (170 ps) and has torque figures of 258 lb-ft at 1750-2500 rpm. This diesel engine gives a great drive. The GTI is a little more impressive, but it misses out on the efficiency of the diesel version.

Looks & Equipment

The standard exterior of the car is enhanced with alloy wheels as a standard component and should drivers wish to add to the cars appearance, metallic paint can be included for £465.

Climate control is featured as standard and electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard too. Leather seating is standard as well. Cruise control comes at a cost of £235.

Rear parking sensors are not standard with this model but can be bought for £440.

The in-car entertainment comes with a CD player and MP3 connectivity. Bluetooth is also as standard, but satellite navigation will cost an additional £1770.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The GTD is fitted with an alarm and central locking as standard, with driver, passenger and front side airbags also as standard.

The Golf is covered under warranty for three years and up to 60,000 miles.

In practicality terms, the Golf seats five occupants with three-door access. The boot space is fairly generous with 350 litres when the rear seats are up and 1305 litres when the seats are folded down.

Value for Money

The car can be bought for £24,635 and this model includes leather seating, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity and climate control. However, for this price drivers could expect rear parking sensors and satellite navigation to be included, although both are offered as extras.

The GTD's fuel economy is great, performing an average of 55.4mpg. It emits 134g/km of CO2, which is relatively low and puts the car in tax band E.

This car will be cheap to run as its fuel consumption is efficient and its insurance group and road tax band are mid range so maintenance costs are standard. The GTI is a better performer, but misses out on the diesel engine's efficiency, so the buyers will have to decide what their priorities are.
