The diesel engine included in this model is one of the most impressive aspects of the car, delivering efficient motoring as well as being able to propel the car from 0-62mph in a swift 8.6 seconds, while the top speed of 134mph is ample for the vast majority of drivers. The driving experience delivered from what is essentially a practical family hatchback is also very good, with steering that is quick to respond. This version comes with an adaptive suspension system that helps the ride to remain comfortable, and the steering is well weighted and offers enough feedback to keep driving fun.
The driving position is also very good, allowing the usual range of adjustment to get comfortable, while the visibility in the car is also very good. The refinement in the cabin is also among the best in class, with the engine barely audible even when it's being given a good workout.
The Golf still retains much of the original charm that made it so popular in the 1980s as a family hatchback, but the years have made it slightly larger, while the narrow black grille with the VW logo is still as distinctive as ever. The alloy wheels that are included with this version help to give the car a classy look, and inside the car, everything has a quality finish, although it isn't the most exciting interior design-wise.
The level of equipment that is included with this version of the Golf is actually quite impressive, with satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity both providing modern interior features. Clever inclusions such as rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors and folding electric mirrors are all welcome additions, while the good level of security equipment is also very impressive.
Practicality is one of the strengths of the Golf, with plenty of space in the back and legroom and headroom to accommodate most adults. The boot isn't the largest in the class, but the wide door provides good access to the back of the car, while the rear seats also fold forward for carrying those larger loads.
The car is supplied with several electronic driver aids such as traction control, ESP and ABS, while there is also a good range of air bags to protect those in the rear of the car as well as looking after the front seat occupants. These features have all helped the Golf achieve the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. Volkswagen is known for producing reliable cars, and this Golf is likely to be another vehicle that enjoys that positive reputation.
The list price of £23,465 may seem like a lot of money for a VW Golf, but this is one of the higher-spec models in the range and should be able to offer an excellent driving experience while being reasonable to run. There are plenty of cheaper options available in the range, but it largely depends on what you are looking for from your hatchback.
