This latest offering from Vauxhall is the sixth generation of the Astra brand. The model has earned itself a reputation as being reliable and affordable, and is often the first choice when looking to buy a medium sized family car. In this latest Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi, Vauxhall have gone all out to be the best in its pack with improved running costs and impressively low emissions.

PROS:  This diesel powered Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi has impressive fuel economy which adds to low running costs. Along with this the interior has been revamped and improved since the last model.

CONS:  At just under £20,000 brand new the diesel version is a significantly more expensive than other cars in its category. The excessive noise of the engine also takes away from the overall ride quality.

Behind the Wheel

The new Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi returns an impressive 62.8mpg, which is significantly better than other cars in its class. One of the leaders in the field, the Volkswagen Golf is only capable of producing 51.4mpg. .

When it comes to handling the Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi is smooth and has plenty of grip, although it can be slow to respond at times. It is well below the high standards of the Golf, which is famous for its excellent handling. Since it is a diesel this particular model has a tendency to be rather noisy. Motorway travel in particular can be particularly noisy, with engine and wind noise quite obtrusive.

Looks & Equipment

The exterior styling of the Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi is very similar to the previous generation. This new version has smoother lines than its predecessor, yet it is still instantly recognisable as an Astra. The interior on the other hand has been revolutionised. The main console has been revamped and has now been given a more futuristic feel. Some of the buttons are a little small but they are built to a decent quality.

This particular Astra model has an impressive number of features as standard. Amongst these are cruise control, air conditioning, remote locking, CD player and fully electric windows. For a little extra some other add-ons can be included, including automatic lights and wipers, an electronic parking brake, alloy wheels and heated leather seats. This range of features is more impressive than most cars in the class.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The new Vauxhall Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi scored the highest possible five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test. Although this was the highest available score it is not alone in achieving this rating. A maximum rating has become what is expected from all cars of this price and class.

This new version has noticeably more space inside than previous Astras. Whereas the older models were a little cramped in the rear, this new Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi has enough space to comfortably hold four adults. However fitting in a fifth may be a little difficult especially for taller people. As well as this there is plenty of storage space scattered about in the interior, with lots of spots to hold phones, drinks and MP3 players.

Vauxhall cars may not have the glowing reputation for reliability enjoyed by some of its competitors, however they are not renowned for being troublesome either. Vauxhall does provide an impressive 100,000 mile warranty which should put your mind at rest when purchasing.

Value for Money

The fuel economy and low emissions of the Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTi mean that it falls into band C for its road tax which twill appeal to those concerned about running costs. As well as this the insurance is considerably cheaper than other cars in its class - Group 15. Combine this with the inevitable savings at the pumps and the Astra ES Tech 1.7 CDTibegins looking like a very attractive option if running costs are a major factor in your purchase.

The major disadvantage to buying this particular Astra is its purchase price. At £19,845 it is more than you might expect and there are cheaper models available which, while more expensive to run, are vastly cheaper to buy.
