The Swift 1.2 SZ4 is very reasonably priced and is a capable performer. It's not the most desirable car in the world - you buy one with your head, not your heart - but it's a good car and should be very reliable.

PROS:  Well equipped, good looking, reasonably priced

CONS:  Rear legroom is tight, the engine needs to be worked hard to give its best

Behind the Wheel

The Swift SZ4 is fitted with a 1.2 litre petrol engine which develops 93bhp and 87 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph takes 12.3 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 103mph. The engine is a little underpowered and you need to work it hard to make good progress. At higher revs it can get very noisy too.

On the plus side, the Swift handles surprisingly well and there is plenty of grip and little body roll through the corners. The steering is a little bit numb but the Swift feels very agile.

The driver’s seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel can be tilted so finding a comfortable driving position shouldn’t be a problem.

Looks & Equipment

The Suzuki Swift 1.2 SZ4 5dr is a good looking car. It doesn't offer the visual appeal of some of is rivals - namely the Fiat 500 and the MINI - but it cuts an attractive profile.

Inside there is a decent amount of kit including height adjustable driver’s seat, electric front and rear windows and door mirrors, CD, MP3 connectivity, cruise control, climate control, Bluetooth, immobiliser and central locking all as standard. Metallic paint can be specified for an extra £399.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The cabin is adequately spacious with plenty of headroom both front and rear owing to the high roofline. However, there is very little legroom in the rear seats and the boot is quite small, offering just 211 litres with the rear seats up and 528 litres with the rear seats down.

The Swift comes with a five star Euro NCAP rating, front and side driver/passenger airbags, curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Also included are ABS, stability control and ISOFIX child-seat mountings.

Suzuki has a good reputation for reliability and the car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

At £12,985, the Suzuki Swift 1.2 SZ4 5dr is not the most affordable car in this class but it is pretty well equipped. 56.5mpg on the combined cycle is very reasonable and the Swift falls under VED band C thanks to low carbon emissions of 116g/km. Group 9 insurance should be very affordable.

Overall, the Swift SZ4 offers very good value for money and low running costs.

The Suzuki Swift 1.2 SZ2 is a very good little car. It doesn't offer the head-turning looks of the Fiat 500 or the MINI but it's a competent all-rounder and is relatively inexpensive to run.
