The Suzuki Swift 1.2 SZ2 is a very good little car. It doesn't offer the head-turning looks of the Fiat 500 or the MINI but it's a competent all-rounder and is relatively inexpensive to run.

PROS:  Cheap, good looking, economical, well made

CONS:  Not very desirable, mediocre performance

Behind the Wheel

The Swift's 1.2 litre petrol engine develops 93bhp at 6000rpm and 87 lb-ft of torque at 4800rpm but you need to rev it hard to get the best from it and it is very noisy as a result. A 0-62 mph time of 12.3 seconds and a top speed of 103mph are hardly earth-shattering but the Swift is entertaining through corners with good levels of grip and very little body roll.

The car’s small dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre around town although the ride does have a slightly firm edge. Put your foot down when the road opens up and the Swift grips surprisingly well but above 70mph the engine emits a drone that soon becomes tiresome.

The driver’s seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel can be tilted so finding a comfortable driving position shouldn’t be a problem. The dash is generally well laid out with simple dials and buttons and visibility is excellent.

Looks & Equipment

The Swift is a good looking car but comes with a fairly basic list of standard equipment. You get electric front windows and door mirrors, CD, MP3 connectivity, immobiliser and central locking as standard.

Metallic paint is a £399 option.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The cabin is quite spacious up front but there is very little legroom in the rear seats, making them suitable only for children. The boot is quite small at 211 litres but can be extended to 528 litres by folding the rear seats down.

Suzuki are renowned for producing reliable cars and we've heard no horror stories about the Swift. You get a three year 60,000 mile warranty included as standard.

The Swift comes with a five star Euro NCAP rating, front and side driver/passenger airbags, curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Also included are ABS, stability control and ISOFIX child-seat mountings.

Value for Money

The Suzuki Swift 1.2 SZ2 5dr is one of the most affordable cars in this class and at £11,130 it is reasonably well equipped. You should achieve 56.5mpg on the combined cycle which is very good and CO2 emissions of 116g/km mean that the Swift falls under a low road tax bracket: C. Group 8 insurance is very cheap indeed.
