The S-Class 600 L is a luxury business limousine, and the high level of luxury and comfort throughout the car is commendable. However, keeping the car on the road is a costly experience, and the depreciation when it comes to selling this model will be poor.

PROS:  The S-Class is one of the best luxury saloons on the market, and this model comes with a powerful engine that puts many sports cars to shame. The long wheelbase also makes for limousine-levels of rear legroom.

CONS:  The purchase price and the running of the car will leave many people feeling decidedly poorer, and the longer wheelbase does compromise the driving experience.

Behind the Wheel

It is largely pointless describing how the S-Class 600 L is to drive - if you're buying this car, chances are you'll be paying someone to drive it. The ride, however, is silky smooth.

The top speed of the S-Class 600 L is limited to 155mph and the car hits 62mph in 4.6 seconds. However, the 600L's business-limo image means that very few cars will ever experience these figures.

Looks & Equipment

The S-Class 600 L is one of the most attractive saloons available, and certainly is more attractive than some of the smaller saloons made by Mercedes-Benz. The front end is typical Merc, but the air intake and fog lights on the bottom of the front bumper improve the look. The sleek lines and attractive rear end means that this is a very attractive car, and this theme continues on the inside. The centre console has a very nice combination of wood and leather, and the stereo system and dashboard all give the impression that this is a very special car.

The S-Class 600 L has almost every feature you could possibly name. The leather seats are powered and heated, and the stereo is very good with an integrated hard drive. There is also a satellite navigation system - so that your chaffeur knows where he's going - and a hands free phone kit.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The S-Class is supplied with a lot of safety equipment as standard, and there are plenty of driving aids that help to channel all the power and speed safely on to the road. It is also supplied with a lot of airbags that will help to look after the driver and passengers should there be an accident. Mercedes-Benz has a very good reputation for reliability, and there is no doubt that the expertise that has gone into making the S-Class will be reflected in its reliability.

The extra space in the back of this version of the S-Class makes it even more practical than the SWB versions, with ample legroom and headroom for those in the front and the rear. The boot space is also plentiful.

Value for Money

The list price for the S-Class 600 L is an eye-watering £114,725.

The S 600 L gets no cheaper when you look at the running costs, with the 5.5 litre engine only able to achieve an average 20.0mpg. Insurance costs are very high, and when it comes to selling the car depreciation is also a massive issue. The S-Class is supplied with a three year warranty and roadside breakdown assistance package.
