The Hyundai i20 1.4 Comfort is, like all Hyundais, excellent value for money. On top of this, it feels well put together and is a very comfortable little car to drive. However, it's dull to look at and dull to drive and it feels like it was built to a price.

PROS:  Comfort by name, comfort by nature - the i20 feels like a much bigger car than it is to drive. It is also cheap to buy and should be cheap to run.

CONS:  Some of the materials used in the interior of the Hyundai i20 feel cheap and the cabin looks dull. The i20 is not much fun to drive either.

Behind the Wheel

The Hyundai i20 1.4 Comfort's 1.4-litre petrol engine develops 99bhp and 101lb-ft of torque which translates into a 0-62mph time of 11.6 seconds and a top speed of 112mph. This is not bad for a small car like the i20 and the little Hyundai feels relatively nippy around town.

Although the Hyundai offers plenty of grip, there's a fair amount of body lean through the bends and the steering provides very little in the way of feedback. However, the i20 is a very quiet little car. A bit of road and wind noise seeps into the cabin at higher speeds but the engine is very refined and only becomes audible under acceleration.

Looks & Equipment

The i20 is a good-looking little car, if a little anonymous. Hyundai have clearly attempted to replicate the ubiquitous European supermini in the i20's styling and we'd have to say that they've done a pretty good job. However, the cabin is very dreary indeed and the interior plastics feel very cheap and scratchy.

Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air-conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth and a CD player with MP3 connectivity. Metallic paint can be specified for a further £425.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The i20 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is supplied with an impressive level of safety equipment including six airbags and stability control.

There's plenty of space in the i20's boot with 295-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1060-litres available with the rear seats down. There's plenty of space for four adults in the cabin, although rear legroom is at a slight premium.

The i20 was rated as average in the 2011 J D Power Survey but is supplied with a five year unlimited mileage warranty which should put your mind at rest.

Value for Money

The Hyundai i20 1.4 Comfort costs £11,745 which is very good considering the amount of space and standard equipment on offer. The Hyundai should also be very cheap to run, managing 52.3mpg (combined) and emitting just 125g/km of CO2, which means it falls under VED band D. Group 12 insurance should also be very reasonable too.

The Korean revolution continues. The i20 is a great little car and at less than £10k, is good enough to tempt buyers away from Fiestas and Corsas. Not without its faults, but not bad at all.

The i20 is a great little car but this is the dud of the range. 48.7mpg is just not good enough in a car of this size - buy the 1.2 or the 1.4 diesel instead.
